16th MarchOn an island the size of Mozambique (a little bigger than Turkey) and about 10% larger than the state of Texas, almost 1100 different languages are spoken. Most of these languages are from the Papuan family, but there are many from the Austronesian family as well. Over 800 of these languages are spoken on the Papua New Guinean part of the island, while the remaining 200-some are spoken in the Indonesian provinces that take up the remainder of the island. Only 12 languages are reported to be spoken on both sides of the island.
